Morel // The Story Behind the Cat

Behind the cat is a story…

MOREL’s cat: from the maker’s mark to the emblem of French know-how since 1880

Cats are known for their excellent vision both day and night, their agility, and their history of crossing time and continents. With these exceptional qualities, the cat became the official emblem of MOREL in 1957.

Jacques, the grandson of Jules Morel—who founded the company in 1880—had the brilliant idea to create a maker’s mark to stamp MOREL’s gold frames—a cat surmounting a capital M. This custom, borrowed from jewelers, later inspired the creation of the MOREL logo. As modern as on the first day, the cat embodies our heritage, our independence, and more than ever, our commitment.

MOREL is a 4th generation family company that revitalizes eyewear craftmanship while staying true to its core values and independence, generation after generation. Creative freedom, industry expertise, and the continuous quest for beauty enable MOREL to create unique frames that inspire individuality and confidence.

Family-run, independent and socially responsible, the company strives to convey its authentic craftsmanship while developing a strong international presence. More than ever, MOREL is committed to overcoming the global challenges of our time…

Today Morel owns the largest design center for eyeglasses in France. Artistic directors, designers, prototype makers and color specialists work hand in hand to design the eyeglasses of the future, from the initial idea to the finished product.
