A Return to Unfinished Art

Some eyewear collections are designed to look complete the moment they leave the factory. Others deliberately leave room for tension, interpretation, and imagination.

That space in between, where precision meets imperfection, has become the creative territory of MASAHIROMARUYAMA.

For Spring/Summer 2026, the Japanese independent eyewear brand continues its exploration of “unfinished art” through two new collection themes, Monocle and Step. Both collections reflect the signature philosophy of founder Masahiro Maruyama, who established the brand in 2011 with the intention of creating frames that feel more like evolving design objects than static accessories.

The Mystery Behind Monocle

The new Monocle collection plays with classical references while introducing a quiet sense of asymmetry and intrigue.

Inspired by the mysterious elegance often associated with vintage monocles and framed portraits, the collection reinterprets those influences through a modern architectural lens.

Compared to earlier releases, the new models embrace a cleaner and more restrained visual language, yet their presence remains unmistakable. The signature right front section now features a stronger full-rim construction, giving the design more confidence and visual weight. One subtle but technically intelligent detail is the slightly offset base securing the right front section, allowing the frame surface to remain visually flat even when assembled with screws.

Particularly striking is the new matte and glossy black titanium combination, a finish pairing that introduces a restrained but powerful contrast. It is a detail that perfectly reflects the MASAHIROMARUYAMA approach, understated at first glance, but deeply considered upon closer inspection.

Step Builds Dimension Through Construction

Where Monocle explores elegance and mystery, Step focuses on structure, layering, and depth.

The concept revolves around the idea of three-dimensional stacking, with individual elements carefully assembled into sculptural compositions that almost appear engineered rather than traditionally designed.

The collection introduces newly developed asymmetrical end pieces positioned on the reverse side of the frame. Like earlier Step designs, these elements are secured exclusively through rivet pins, reinforcing the collection’s technical purity while maintaining an unexpectedly delicate appearance.

The stepped transition flowing from the front to the temples creates a layered visual rhythm that gives the eyewear a strong architectural identity. Despite the complexity of the construction, the frames retain a refined lightness, proving once again that experimental design does not need to sacrifice wearability.

The collection will also offer two distinct nose pad configurations, including a metal-arm version and a direct-mount small nose pad option, allowing for different fitting preferences.

Continuing the Language of Incomplete Beauty

With both collections, MASAHIROMARUYAMA continues to challenge the conventional idea that eyewear must be visually balanced or traditionally resolved. Instead, the brand embraces controlled imbalance, visible construction, and subtle disruption as part of its artistic language.

At a time when many eyewear collections chase familiarity and commercial safety, MASAHIROMARUYAMA remains committed to experimentation. The result is eyewear that feels less like fashion product and more like wearable contemporary design.

The new Monocle and Step collections consist of two models each, available in four colour variations per model, with deliveries scheduled to begin from June 2026 onward.
