    Amazing Eyewear is nothing short of an “amazing book”. Volume 1 had me hooked, it was no doubt in my mind that Volume 2 was going to be a blockbuster hit. Not only did I wait by the door in anticipation for the book, like a dog waiting for his owner to come home; but I was excited for the entire experience.

    When I say experience, calm your nerves and grab a sharp exact knife, because the box becomes part of the presentation and the unboxing is nothing short of spectacular.

    The unboxing experience starts with the pizza box style package hinging open to reveal a nice note from the author and artist Maarten Weidema. My first thought was not this time, you see volume one was on the nose with the pizza box packaging, I tore it open like a ravenous “frat bro” at a keg party, not this time I was going to soak in the visual experience and make sure I took the time to savor. As a nice little bonus the memo from the artist includes a discount towards the first volume. If you do not own the first volume, grab it while it is available as the feel and quality of the book oozes “collectors item”.

    The cover is a nice matt black finish with gold leaf embossing, this is no paperback novel, case bound with a silk ribbon for a bookmark the luxuriousness reminds me more of an art piece than a book. I know I’m a book nerd so it’s hard to take my opinion on a book since I geek out on most books, but this is different. At this point my hearts racing and I’m just too excited so I start flipping through trying to devour every last bit of rich colors and high dynamic range photography present before my eye’s. Masterfully color corrected and laid out, if you ripped pages out and framed them you could decorate an art gallery. This is where I have to give a warning, IF YOU RIP ANYTHING OUT OF THIS BOOK, I HAVE A FEELING THEIR MIGHT BE A SHIFT IN THE EARTHS POLAR AXIS AND I WILL KNOW, DON’T MAKE ME HUNT YOU DOWN!

    Each Frame Designer is highlighted with a generous amount of high fashion photography. This is where the art and business collide in an explosion of fireworks. Every brand highlights the brand story, philosophy, timelines, and a sample of their collection. When I say business, this thing cuts life a knife, having the story, philosophy and so many interesting facts and points about the design any dispenser carrying these lines should be at a strategic advantage with their clients. The copyright material is so compelling and engaging that using Amazing Eyewear as a business tool can easily net the cost of the book in one transaction.

    First I owe the author/artist and apology, when I received the first volume and found out he was writing a second volume, it must have felt like I was stalking him and pushing constantly for him to write and finish volume 2. I am truly sorry, yes I was sorry/not sorry. Amazing books, amazing volume, keep them coming. I imagine buying volume 100 with the same giddy and glee that I had buying volume 1.

Where I was a pioneer in the late 90s by using 3D CAD software to create the flat patterns to have acetate frames milled by a CNC, nowadays that original 3D file can be used directly by a 5-axis CNC that will mill out the complete frame, inclination and nose pads included.

For several years now, that same 3D file can be sent directly to a 3D printer who will create the frame, no matter the complexity. But when it comes to artificial intelligence, where does the work of a designer end and where does the computer take over?

In this second book on eyewear design, I will look into these various innovations and see what it has in store for our industry, which I like to call the “Optical Arena”.

In this all-encompassing eyewear guide, we delve into innovations such as artificial intelligence and 3D printing, and consider sustainability in design over 30 insightful pages. We don’t stop there – 20 pages are dedicated to the latest eyewear trends, and 40 more to the technical components and materials that make a perfect pair.
