In 1999, Bevel Specs came into existence due to the enterprising spirit of Rick Nelson and Richar Mewha, prompted by the birth of Mewha’s first child. Recognizing a unique gap in the market, they nurtured a creative vision, fostered remarkable relationships, and sought to fill that niche. Despite their lack of formal design education, they were motivated by a desire to express their identities, crafting eyewear that was not only stylish and flattering but also inspired by the vibrant hues of the cosmetic world.
Their narrative begins with a deep-rooted respect for Japanese artisans whose pursuit for engineering excellence and innovative design has been a profound influence. Claudio Arena, a charismatic pillar and a wellspring of fascinating idioms, became part of their journey 12 years ago while their companion Rick transitioned into retirement.
Their journey is a testament to resilience, reflecting the grit of many small businesses that learn and grow from their missteps. Despite global uncertainties and contrary advice regarding Lasik or online competition, they remained undeterred, their focus unwavering. Their commitment to personal service, quality, comfort, and an enduring passion for their craft have empowered them to emerge stronger than ever.
They have been a leader in unifying and promoting independent eyewear designers through their event organization of the LOFT NYC and LOFT SF. They are also extremely proud to sponsor charitable causes on a case-by-case basis, donating eyewear to people in need in Tanzania, Guyana, Haiti and more.
