France becomes first EU country to cover MiYOSMART lenses
In a landmark public health move, the French Government has become the first in the European Union to offer reimbursement for MiYOSMART, the clinically proven myopia control spectacle lenses developed by HOYA Vision Care. This decisive step follows an in-depth review by the French Health Authority (HAS), and represents a monumental shift in how progressive myopia in children is managed across Europe.
From July 1st, children in France aged 5 to 16 with high myopia (-6.00D) and/or rapidly progressing myopia (-0.50D per year) will be eligible to receive MiYOSMART lenses under the national reimbursement system. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in European eye care, ensuring that families affected by severe childhood myopia gain access to effective, non-invasive solutions supported by complementary health insurance coverage.
Hoya Vision MiYOSMART:
A Game-Changer inChildhood Myopia Management
MiYOSMART lenses utilize revolutionary Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Technology, offering a clinically validated method to slow myopia progression while correcting vision. Backed by eight years of follow-up data—the longest of any spectacle lens in the field—MiYOSMART has already helped over 12 million children across more than 40 countries.
In a two-year randomized controlled trial, MiYOSMART lenses were shown to slow myopia progression by an average of 60% compared to standard single vision lenses. This makes them one of the most effective tools available for managing childhood myopia, which is expected to affect up to 5 billion people globally by 2050.
“With more than 500,000 children in France set to be eligible to receive MiYOSMART spectacle lenses, this milestone is a hugely significant step forward for myopia management. At HOYA Vision Care, we believe that ‘Every Child Deserves Better’, and thanks to the dedication of the professionals and organizations who share this vision, we are proud to play our part in creating a healthier future, where every child has the opportunity to see clearly and unleash their full potential.”
A Call for Global Action on Myopia
The urgency of addressing childhood myopia has been underscored by the World Health Organization’s SPECS2030 initiative, which calls on countries to prioritize refractive error and vision care. Myopia typically progresses fastest before the age of 12, making early intervention crucial.
“As a society, we need to take urgent action to mitigate the burden of myopia by making it a global priority for governments and public health bodies. The reimbursement of MiYOSMART in France is a significant step forward in our fight against childhood myopia. I hope can signal a global movement, not only to acknowledge the need for prevention and early intervention but also ensuring effective treatments are accessible to those who need them most – ensuring no child’s vision is irreversibly compromised.”
As part of its ongoing efforts, HOYA Vision Care launched the Confidence Through Evidence campaign in 2023, aimed at empowering Eye Care Professionals with scientific tools and training to confidently recommend MiYOSMART. With France leading the way in access and reimbursement, this milestone marks not just a victory for French children—but a call to action for the rest of the world.
