ANFAO // ‘The Lens of Time’ Exhibition

‘THE LENS OF TIME’ Exhibit by ANFAO Honors Italian Eyewear on Made in Italy Day

In celebration of National Made in Italy Day, ANFAO presents “The Lens of Time – The History of Eyewear in Italy,” a landmark exhibition that traces the evolution of Italian eyewear across seven centuries. Open to the public from May 7 to July 30, 2025, this immersive experience is hosted at Palazzo Flangini in Venice and offers free entry to all visitors.

Organized as part of a wider initiative by MIMIT (Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy), the exhibition is curated by the Fondazione Museo dell’Occhiale, in partnership with Fondazione di Venezia and Fondazione M9 – Museo del ’900. It reflects ANFAO’s ongoing mission to promote Italian optical craftsmanship on a global stage.

A Journey Through Craft, Design, and Innovation

The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections—historical origins, contemporary design, and manufacturing and materials—spotlighting the Belluno district’s pivotal role in shaping global eyewear trends.

Visitors can explore more than 100 artifacts, including rare frames, historic images, interactive installations, and artistic interpretations. Items have been drawn from the renowned Eyewear Museum of Pieve di Cadore, as well as two notable private collections: Venetian optician Roberto Vascellari and designer Lucio Stramare.

From the first rudimentary lenses of the 13th century to today’s sustainable, cutting-edge creations, The Lens of Time offers a sensory journey that fuses art, science, fashion, and technology. It celebrates eyewear as both a practical tool and an evolving cultural symbol—one that has moved from utility to statement piece, embodying Italian style and ingenuity.

About ANFAO

ANFAO (Associazione Nazionale Fabbricanti Articoli Ottici) is the Italian Association of Optical Goods Manufacturers, established to represent and support the interests of Italy's eyewear industry. Founded in 1954, ANFAO brings together companies involved in the production of frames, lenses, sunglasses, and optical accessories, with a particular focus on promoting Made in Italy craftsmanship and innovation.

One of ANFAO’s most significant achievements is the creation of MIDO (Mostra Internazionale di Ottica, Optometria e Oftalmologia), one of the world’s largest and most influential eyewear trade shows, held annually in Milan.

Through MIDO and other initiatives, ANFAO not only highlights the excellence of Italian eyewear but also advocates for industry growth through lobbying, training programs, export support, and sustainability initiatives. The association also collects market data, monitors trends, and fosters innovation to strengthen Italy’s position as a global leader in eyewear manufacturing.
