The world has lost some of its color with the passing of Gai Gherardi, the visionary co-founder of l.a.Eyeworks.
Known for her fearless creativity, boundless energy, and signature bold, colorful eyewear, Gai reshaped the way we see the world, both literally and artistically.
She passed away peacefully on March 16th, 2024, in Los Angeles, surrounded by her life partner of 50 years, Rhonda Saboff, and her sister, Heather Gherardi.
Her departure leaves a void in the eyewear industry and beyond, but her legacy of vibrant expression, unapologetic individuality, and artistic rebellion will continue to inspire generations.
Gai’s journey into eyewear began unexpectedly in the 1970s, when her best friend Barbara McReynolds got them both jobs at an optical shop on Lido Isle.
What started as a job quickly turned into a lifelong passion for eyewear design, leading them to open the first l.a.Eyeworks store on Melrose Avenue in 1979.

With an unshakable belief that glasses were more than just functional tools, she and Barbara challenged conventional eyewear design, crafting bold, sculptural frames in daring colors that empowered the wearer. Under her leadership, l.a.Eyeworks became a global symbol of creativity and self-expression, with her iconic designs gracing the faces of artists, musicians, and tastemakers worldwide.

Beyond eyewear, Gai was a force of nature—a champion of the arts, a supporter of independent creators, and a dedicated activist. She served on design juries, lectured internationally, and nurtured young talent. Her generosity knew no bounds, whether she was advocating for artists, environmental causes, or LGBTQ+ rights. She was passionate about conservation, lending her voice to protect the California Desert Tortoise and the Dumpy Tree Frog, proving that her love for the world extended far beyond design.
Keep fishing. Love one another.
Even in her final days, Gai remained larger than life, embracing every moment with the same infectious energy and optimism she brought to her designs. Just last month at MIDO Milano, I was talking to Brent, asking if Gai had joined them in Milan again this year. Of course, she had. She was always where the action was, bringing her unmistakable presence to every gathering.

Gai’s passing is a profound loss for our industry, for independent eyewear, and for everyone lucky enough to have known her. She didn’t just design glasses—she designed a new way to see the world: brighter, bolder, and unapologetically unique. And though the world may seem a little dimmer without her, her spirit will live on in every daring frame, every fearless creation, and every person who dares to see differently.
