About this sustainable brand:

The creation of Monkeyglasses: The company was created by Mai-britt and Morten Seaton in 2009. With a background in the fashion and eyewear industry, they discovered an increase in demand for their collections. Mai-britt and Morten wanted to do a difference within the industry, which is why they saw the opportunity to
create a niche product: Spectacle frames made of natural, renewable materials, handmade under good working conditions, in delicious Nordic designs – and at a fair price.

The foundation was found in Italy: Acetate of cotton fibers, where both the soft flowers and the hard stem are ground and boiled into a fossil-oil-free material that is strong, flexible, and light.

The production is placed in Hong Kong, where both employees’ conditions and environmental considerations comply with the UN Global Compact. There is no waste in the production – all carved pieces of the cotton material are melted down and used for new spectacle frames.

The design is made by the owner Mai-britt, in small, well-thought-out collections that combine trends and dressiness into long-lasting looks. Within the last few years, Monkeyglasses has gained access to recycled stainless steel, and has therefore created more frames where the metal is more prominent, but the cotton acetate is still included, like soft and light rods.

The design philosophy is: Look good while doing good and the project has succeeded! In 2016, Monkeyglasses won silver in the category ’Sustainable Products’ at the A’ Design Award, one of the world’s largest and most influential design awards, which are presented every year in Italy.

Each pair of Monkeyglasses is being transported in plastic-free transportation bags, that are made of recycled paper. With each pair of glasses comes the unique, foldable case, which is also based on recycled paper.

The name behind Monkeyglasses, is not just about being a proud ‘spectacle monkey’! Since the inception of the company, Monkeyglasses has supported ‘Save the Orangutan in Borneo’ Foundation. The organization was founded by a Danish woman and is today run by local employees. The organization works towards the
goal of conserving the rainforests and the crucial biodiversity they contain.
